Vocoders are one of the most recognisable synthetic effects from the time when cassette players were still widespread, and have been used for countless classic film and music productions. Essentially, a vocoder cuts up your voice in different frequency bands via an envelope follower, after which these bits of sonic information are glued to a second signal in the form of band-boosters. This way, you can get a synth to sing, and you won't have to hire a choir to get the samples you need. The XILS Lab Vocoder 5000 can do all of that and more, at a fraction of the price you'd have paid for it had it been released in physical form a couple of decades ago. Many vocoders don't just depend on your voice as the input signal, but need an external sample (e.g synth-strings; a popular combo) for tweaking. Fortunately, XILS Lab have loaded a synthesizer into the Vocoder 5000, meaning that any sound-designers are pretty much good to get tweaking and tinkering with sounds right away!
