The Special Features of the Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster

The period-correct, 1957-style lightweight alder body has been coated in extra-thin, Custom-Shop-quality nitrocellulose lacquer to guarantee enhanced resonance. Johnson has hand-selected a V-profiled neck, sealed in a matching tinted nitro-lacquer to complete the retro look, and carved from a chunk of quarter-sawn maple, boosting the stability and strength. Ultra-low action and effortless string-grip is assured by a flat and modern 12 inch fretboard radius plus a set of polished medium-jumbo frets. And, since the devil lies in the details, the fitted vintage-style machine heads have been staggered, gradually reducing the height from the low-E to the high-E which doesn't just remove the need for any string-trees, but limits the chance of any rattle and noise and leaves even more tone and even more sustain.

Custom-Voiced EJ Single-Coils

Johnson went through no-less-than nineteen different prototypes before finding the pickup set he was looking for. What results, is three Custom Shop modified single-coils that feature a new wiring material and a specially developed winding technique. These specifics produce the ultimately smooth character of Eric Johnson's sound: clear, sparkling and transparent, with rich and tasty overtones. Next to that, the EJ Strat features another one of Eric's sought-after mods, where the tone pot has been connected to the neck and bridge pickup in place of the standard neck-and-middle configuration. This makes the bridge pickup more accessible, and shapes a warmer and more punchy tone.
