Using the side-chain filter, the compression can be trained to respond less heavily to lower frequencies, giving you way more control over the chaos and retaining the bottom end. Using the mix control knob, the processed signal can be blended with the unprocessed signal, so you can keep all of the smack and grit of the original signal while pulling back on the intensity.
