If you want to record on location, you'll need a special field recorder. Take the Tascam DR-680MKII, for instance! It's equipped with four XLR/jack combo inputs and two 6.3mm jack inputs, as well as an S/PDIF input and output, adding up to a total of eight input channels. The recorder also has six analogue outputs, so you have eight output channels at your disposal too. A recording quality of 192 Khz/24 bits is no problem whatsoever for the DR-680MKII.

No wonder the DR680MKII is equipped with high-grade HDDA preamplifiers - the first passage way for your audio signals - which have a fully discrete design and operate individually. Additionally, the field recorder is equipped with a built-in MS decoder, a unique feature that enables you to easily convert an MS microphone setup into a stereo signal. Overview

Although the DR-680 MKII has no fewer than eight inputs, you might find yourself in a situation that requires more.
