Arturia Pigments 2 is a mammoth of a virtual synthesiser that effortlessly combines wavetable synthesis with subtractive synthesis. The foundation is provided by two sound engines, either of which can be virtual-analogue or wavetable. The result is then pushed through two filters (there's a mouth watering amount of these to choose from) and then through the effects section (there's just as big a stack of effects to choose from), which on the face of it, sounds just like any standard synthesiser, but it really gets fun once you start messing around the small army of controllers and start doing stuff like morphing between wavetable positions. Morphing really is just one of the overwhelming amount of options offered by the wavetable engine of Pigments: you also get access to FM, phase modulation, phase distortion, wavefolding, and a further range of sonic-based toys and warping tools. If you're still cutting your teeth in the world of sound-design, plenty of solid presets also come included, but if you're a seasoned sound-sculptor, there's an entire world to play with.
