In the picture, the Tascam DR-701D audio recorder looks pretty big, but it's anything but a 19-inch rack module! This compact multi-tracker can be mounted right underneath your DSLR camera. Despite its modest size, the DR-701D packs a big punch - you can hook up four microphones to it, for starters! Make a stereo mix of these four tracks and record it directly onto the two extra tracks for a stereo mix. That's six tracks in total, with a quality of 96 kHz for four tracks and 192 kHz for two. If that's still not enough, you can attach more DR-701D units together for even more tracks.

The quality of the Tascam DR-701D

It's true, your DSLR camera is capable of recording audio, but it goes without saying that the Tascam can do much better, especially if you're a broadcasting professional. With four mic inputs at your disposal, you can equip four separate interview candidates with their own lavalier microphone for close-mic recording. The main benefit of the six tracks (four mic + one stereo mix) is that you have immediate access to a good stereo mix (great for fast deadlines!), as well as extra tracks for creating an even better mix when you have more time.
