These CL2HW claves by Meinl are made of African hardwood and are bigger than your average claves. Thanks to their bigger size, their base tone is quite a bit lower in pitch, but they still retain the dry, cutting sound that claves are known for when you strike them together. The claves are not identical. The idea is that you take the smaller of the pair, and hit that against the special notch in the bigger clave. And although these claves are meant to be used by hitting them against each other, they can also be used on a multitude of other surfaces, such as wood, plastic or metal. Claves originally come from South America, which is why they are extremely well suited for use in Latin American music styles, such as salsa.
